• Grade 12: Myth and Identity

  In this advanced course, seniors read literary versions of Greek and Roman myths, watch films that deal with similar themes as the myths with which they are paired, and read modern theoretical work that mostly explores a psychoanalytic approach to questions of human identity.  Coursework focuses on three main themes that can be viewed as oppositional pairs: chaos/order, individual/environment, female/male—the last pair will probably be the most central. Additional explorations include the study of how violence (or the threat of it) plays a role in creating, sustaining, and eventually undermining all three pairs. As the title of the course suggests, another crucial aspect of the class will be the ways in which myths (may) establish templates for human identity.
